What Is KD in SEO? Read the Score Before You Drop the Keyword
KD is an SEO tool estimate, not a Google score. Learn what KD, PKD and RKD measure, and what to check about intent and page types before you drop a keyword stuck near page two.
Brand promotion: this article introduces Guangsuan's keyword difficulty guidance and ranking service. It is not an independent review.
If a core term for your small business sits near Google page two, a high KD number alone should not decide whether you drop it. KD describes what a tool estimates about competition for that query. It does not tell you what the searcher wants, whether your page matches that task, or whether you hold the proof to answer it.
What KD actually measures
Keyword difficulty (KD) is an SEO tool's estimate of how difficult it may be to reach the leading organic results for a query. It is not a Google score or your website's probability of ranking. For beginners, there is no universally best KD number: start with relevant opportunities, use one tool's scale to organize them, then inspect the actual results and the work your site can deliver.
Keep the vendor and metric name beside every number. Ahrefs KD is described as a 0-100 estimate based on referring domains of current top pages. Semrush KD% is described as a 0-100 estimate of effort to reach the top 10 including link, authority and SERP inputs. Different inputs and snapshots mean the same 40 in two products does not mean the same competition. Do not average them into a supposed true KD. See Guangsuan's guide to what KD means across tools for the published definitions.
KD, PKD and RKD answer different questions
General difficulty looks at the query overall without selecting your site first. Semrush's Personal Keyword Difficulty (PKD) estimates the difficulty for a specified domain to reach the top 10. Mangools describes Relative Keyword Difficulty (RKD) for a specified URL. A domain and a single page are different objects, so those personalized scores are not interchangeable and a percentage sign is not a success probability.
When you record a score, save vendor, metric name, country and language, collection date, and the exact domain or URL you entered for PKD or RKD. If a report is for the wrong property or market, it does not become applicable because the keyword text is the same.
If you are stuck near positions 11-20, check intent and page type first
Open representative results in your target language and market and answer three checks before you pause the keyword or ask about paid help:
- Searcher task: Is it buy, compare, troubleshoot, learn steps, or reach a known brand? A navigational query may not fit a general explainer, even with a low score.
- Page fit: Do leaders use product pages, collections, comparisons, tutorials, documentation, or tools? If leaders are product collections and you offer only a blog post, that mismatch matters more than the number. Check whether you already own a URL of the right type that could be improved.
- Proof you can provide: Real specifications, dimensions, compatibility, steps you have tested, images, or support records the answer needs. An outline alone does not prove the evidence exists.
Read several ranking pages and note what each answers and what you would handle differently. A forum thread can answer an experience question well, and an older date alone does not make a page obsolete. Google Ads Competition is a different measure: it describes advertiser competition under selected location and network settings, not organic difficulty.
Hypothetical example: choose a page, not the lowest score
For illustration only, suppose a hypothetical small supplier sells storage boxes and considers a broad phrase, a narrower phrase for a small cupboard, and a measuring question. This example is hypothetical and has no measured KD, volume, or ranking result.
The broad phrase may need a category-style page with real inventory, dimensions, and filters. The narrower phrase may need outside dimensions, lid clearance, and stacking notes. The measuring question may need numbered steps plus a link to the relevant collection for readers who finish measuring. The useful output is a page decision with task and missing material named, not a list of green scores.
When to consider a keyword ranking service
Fix crawl, index, and page-fit blocks first. A ranking project does not replace site repair or content work. Guangsuan's GSR entry condition requires the target keyword to already hold a Google natural ranking in the top 20 for the agreed country, language and device. Its scope is off-site work and does not ask for backend access for content operations. The top-20 rule is the service's business entry condition, not a Google qualification.
Google decides search rankings, and no provider can guarantee a fixed position. For conditions and pricing scope, see the GSR keyword ranking service page. If you ask for an evaluation, bring the exact query, one target URL, country, language and device, current position evidence with date, and the business reason the term matters.
FAQ
Should a high KD remove a keyword? No. Inspect intent, page types near 11-20, and your proof first, then choose to improve a page, gather material, or hold the topic.
Why do two tools show different numbers? Models, data sources, and snapshots differ. Record the settings and keep one consistent metric for ordering.
Is Google Ads Competition the same as organic KD? No. That figure describes advertiser competition, not organic difficulty.
