What 9 SEO Metrics Mean Before You Change a Page

A plain-English checklist for small-business owners: what 9 SEO metrics actually measure, how to split by device and country, and which page to fix first.

Brand promotion: this article introduces Guangsuan's SEO metrics guide and Google SEO service. It is not an independent review.

If you run a small-business site and Search Console shows impressions, clicks, CTR and position side by side, it is tempting to rewrite the page with the lowest number. Do not start there. Each number is built under different rules, and GA4 arrival data is built under another set of rules again.

Short answer for an owner about to edit a page: the nine metric groups describe separate stages — whether a result was shown, whether it was picked, whether arrival led to a contact you accept, and whether the page was eligible to appear with supporting signals recorded correctly. Lock property, search type, one finished date range, country, device and brand split first, then read those stages in order. Method definitions follow Guangsuan's 9 SEO metrics guide. Where repair spans templates or many URLs, whole-site scope is described in the Guangsuan Google SEO service.

1. Was the page shown, and for which queries

Search Console measures visibility and clicks on Google Search. GA4 measures observable activity after people reach your site. Time zones, scope, consent, successful tag execution and canonical attribution can all create differences, so do not force the two totals to match.

For session-based acquisition, keep session grouping apart from first-visit grouping because each answers a separate question. A GSC click is not a GA4 session.

What to lock before you compare:

  • Use one property, one search type and one completed range for every export. Exclude any partial last day.
  • Record language, country, device, branded versus non-branded queries, and the relevant landing pages.
  • Group queries by product, use case and buying question, then inspect a representative sample that slipped or offers a useful gap.

Hypothetical teaching illustration only, with invented figures: 20 clicks from 1,000 impressions is 2%. That line shows arithmetic. It is not a pass mark, not a client result and not a target across intents.

For position, GSC average position is an impression-based aggregate for the selected scope, not a fixed live rank seen by every searcher. A third-party keyword count depends on its own database, market and collection dates, so two tools can differ without either being wrong.

2. Was the result picked among similar results

CTR is picks divided by presentations, times 100. Compare only inside matching intent, position band, device, market and page. More low-position impressions can reduce aggregate CTR while total clicks rise.

Before you rewrite a title, check:

  • Does the current result page favour a product, tutorial, video or local service?
  • Review whether your page answers that task.
  • Read the title and description actually shown for the same query, page, country, device and position band.

Improve it by writing a title that accurately communicates the page's answer and useful distinction, and describing genuine page content in the description. Do not insert an unverified certificate, speed figure or benefit claim to win clicks. Do not copy markup seen elsewhere only because it appears in source.

3. Did arrival lead to a contact you accept

A chat tap, finished form, download, basket move and paid order are different outcomes. Test the actual event implementation, then distinguish tests, duplicates, spam and genuine business enquiries in your operational records.

Label the calculation you actually use, because sessions with a key event divided by sessions is a different measure from events divided by sessions when one session holds several events. As a rule, queries cannot be tied one by one to a single order.

Practical check an owner can repeat:

  1. Open landing-page sessions, sessions with the wanted event and business-confirmed contacts together for the same page and range.
  2. Check the mobile form, contact route and de-duplication.
  3. Keep missing data marked as missing rather than filling it with another benchmark.

4. Did the visit answer the task

For bounce, apply the GA4 definition fixed in your property. It is not simply the old single-page-session definition. Default engagement criteria include lasting more than 10 seconds, having a key event, or at least two page or screen views; check the property's actual configuration.

A single-page visit may answer the reader's question. Conversely, duplicated page_view events can make engagement look artificially strong, so check capture first.

For time and depth, GA4 focus time measures time with the page in focus or the app in the foreground. Needing four pages to find a specification is not necessarily better than finding it on one. Longer time can mean useful study or confusion. Interpret time, subsequent pages and task completion together, then add the missing specification, condition, worked check or next step rather than adding headings or images by quota.

5. Was the page eligible, and were supporting signals read correctly

Maintain a defined set of canonical pages intended for indexing and prioritise important pages within it. Sites hold login pages, parameter copies and material held out by choice, so indexing every discoverable URL is not a useful aim.

Group Page indexing report entries by their reasons and inspect representative URLs. The indexed version and the current live test can differ, and requesting indexing does not force acceptance. Fix proven blocks such as accidental noindex, blocking, wrong canonical target, unavailable page or missing rendered matter. A crawled-but-unindexed state alone does not establish thin copy, and a correctly merged duplicate is not by itself a removal task.

For links, total links and referring sites are different counts. Discovery coverage, refresh timing and de-duplication vary by crawler, so an absent row in one report does not establish that a live link vanished. Google's Links report is not a complete current indexing test for every source page. Where link help is used, reconcile source URL, target URL, anchor, attribute, availability and check time against the delivery list. Published, indexed and improved target-page rankings are separate milestones.

For authority scores, DA, Ahrefs DR and other tools' metrics come from different models and are not interchangeable units of link equity. Compare peers inside the same tool and time window while reading real pages and outcomes.

6. Read country and device before you pick the page

Your site is not the global average. The only figure that should drive your work is your own Search Console device report.

For September 2026 worldwide, StatCounter reports mobile 60.04% and desktop 39.96% as a global traffic share. That is a real, dated, checkable figure — and it is a share of web traffic by device, not a statement about your industry, your country, or your buyer. It shifts by country and year. If you read only worldwide mobile share and rebuild around it, you optimise for a device your visitors mostly are not using.

Worked check you can repeat with your own data:

  1. Fix one product group, one country and one device. Apply the device filter and look at your top queries and landing pages separately for desktop and mobile.
  2. Open Pages to locate a URL where clicks fell. Open its query list with impressions, clicks and position together. Tag new, existing and off-task queries.
  3. A row with very few impressions can swing on one click, so do not sort by lowest rate alone. Decide which question you are asking: where are we seen by impressions, or where do people act by clicks. Report both.

As a hypothetical teaching illustration only for one fixed scope, mobile 300 impressions with 9 clicks is 3%, desktop 300 impressions with 21 clicks in the same scope does not by itself prove desktop copy is stronger. Check whether mobile queries seek fast specs while desktop queries seek comparison, and whether the mobile title truncates or the spec table is hard to tap on a phone.

7. Which page to change first

Improve it by locating the landing pages, countries and devices driving the change. Verify measurement before judging seasonality, availability, ranking or wording. A smaller organic share can also reflect larger paid spend.

Record dates, filters, change made, owner and what remains unverified. If checks point past one page, such as a template canonical or a robots rule for an exact path, bring site address, target country and language, affected URLs, one completed range with filters, what changed and when, who can approve code or copy, and how a contact is qualified. That is the point to ask about technical repair, content supply and external resources together.

FAQ

Should flat impressions trigger a rewrite? No. Flat impressions mean the page is seldom offered for the query. Confirm eligibility, entry links and whether page type matches what results favour for that task, then decide.

Clicks are up but confirmed enquiries are flat — is wording wrong? Not necessarily. That shape points past selection to page type, offer detail, form ease and qualification rules. Keep visits and business-confirmed contacts on separate lines while you check the mobile form and reply path.
